เชื่อกันว่าลูกท้อ (ลูกพีช) มีถิ่นกำเนิดในประเทศจีน และมีชื่อเสียงจากการที่ซุนหงอคง ตัวเอกในเรื่อง “ไซอิ๋ว” เป็นผู้รับประทาน ในจีนสมัยโบราณยังถูกเรียกว่า “เซ็นกะ” (ผลไม้เซียน) โดยถือว่าเป็นผลไม้ที่ช่วยปัดเป่าสิ่งชั่วร้ายและนำมาซึ่งอายุยืนยาว คาดว่าลูกท้อเข้าสู่ญี่ปุ่นผ่านทางคาบสมุทรเกาหลี แม้จะยังไม่ทราบแน่ชัดว่าเข้ามาเมื่อใด แต่เนื่องจากมีการค้นพบเมล็ดลูกท้อป่าจากซากปรักหักพังในสมัยยาโยอิ (ประมาณ 2,000 ปีก่อน) จึงเชื่อว่าน่าจะเข้ามาถึงก่อนหน้านั้น เมื่อรินลงในแก้ว กลิ่นหอมของลูกท้อจะฟุ้งกระจายไปทั่ว “กลิ่นลูกท้อจริงๆ ด้วย!” และเมื่อจิบ รสชาติอันหวานฉ่ำก็จะแผ่ซ่านไปทั่วทั้งปาก

Peaches, said to originate in China, are famous for being eaten by Sun Wukong, the protagonist of “Journey to the West.” In ancient China, they were also called “Senka” (Immortal Fruit) and regarded as a fruit that wards off evil and brings eternal youth and longevity. It is believed they entered Japan via the Korean Peninsula, though the exact timing is unclear. Since wild peach seeds were discovered in ruins from the Yayoi period (about 2,000 years ago), they must have arrived even earlier. When poured into a glass, the aroma of peaches fills the nostrils. “It smells just like peaches!” Upon tasting, the sweet flavor of peach spreads throughout the mouth.

中国が原産と言われている桃は、「西遊記」の主人公、孫悟空が食べたていたことでも有名です。古来中国では「仙果」とも呼ばれ、邪気を払い不老長寿をもたらす果物とされていました。日本へは、朝鮮半島を通って入ってきたと思われますが、いつごろかは、定かでないようです。弥生時代「約2000年前」の遺跡から、野生桃の種子が、発見されていますから、それ以前でしょう。グラスに注ぐと桃の香りが鼻孔に広がります。「桃の香りだ～」口に含むと甘い桃の味が口中に広がります。
